Madagascar 2014 – Stage 1 – Aug, 31 2014

RacingThePlanet: Madagascar 2014 – Stage 1 – Aug, 31 2014
We send a big bonjour to everyone following and all of those who have sent emails of support!! We took a whack load of buses from Diego Suarez yesterday to a military base on the coast. Hopped off the buses and all of a sudden some African drums and singing fill the air; a few feet ahead are a line of local dancers and singers to welcome us to what would be the start of our race. The first stage has been completed and we felt strong all the way through to the last checkpoint, then the heat started to unleash its wrath and we slowed a bit to get to the first camp. Today we surprised so many people that we ACTUALLY ran the stage in our Xero Shoes, and even more we finished the stage with healthy feet 🙂 The first stage was absolutely beautiful; from zebu to local children cheering you on to volcanic rock on the beachy shore, Madagascar is nothing short of amazing so far. We have met an incredible group of athletes here from all around the world that are nothing short of supportive….one great thing about the ultra community. After trekking into the end of stage one today to our delightful surprise a pick up truck waited all the competitors with a trunk load of fresh coconuts!!!!! (maybe they felt bad calling the terrain a “dirt road” and it turned out to be mostly deep sandy roads, haha) That’s one way to get the much needed extra calories:P

Please keep emailing us, we love at the end of the day getting to read messages from all of you. Even though we are unable to reply, we get to read all of them every night!!

lots of love
