The Edmonton Run-a-thon 2014 was the first event of its kind; building the foundation for a series of events planned to take place on an annual basis in Edmonton and additional cities in future years. All funds raised from the Run-a-thon will be going to support Impossible 2 Possible, an incredible organization whose mission is to Educate, Inspire and Educate Youth on both a local and international level.
Impossible 2 Possible (I2P) organizes youth expeditions, where a small team of youth ambassadors are brought to a remote location of the world to run upwards of a marathon a day, experiencing the nature, culture and people of the area. This adventure is then complemented with an educational curriculum uniquely build around the expedition. Photo’s, video’s and other materials are then broadcasted and streamed live to schools all over the world who wish to work this amazing experiential learning into their core curriculum. This essentially brings the classroom onto the expedition, by bringing the expedition into the classroom.
Motivated by the fire inside us, we started planning the Edmonton Run-a-thon to not only raise funds for I2P and their experiential learning program, but to spread I2P’s message and try to inspire people to break through their perceived limitations. Countless emails, phone calls, and meetings later, we had the date set and the wheels started to turn. Our main goal with the first Run-a-thon was to take a relatively simple event and pour our passion into it. In hopes of attracting like minded people who aspire for adventure, push limits, and question the norm, the participants came from all ages and walks of life.
The Run-a-thon was fuelled by the support of local sponsors who provided everything from prizing to logistical materials to media productions. To all those who stood behind the event, we extend a huge thanks from the bottom of our hearts. Two average people can only do so much, but with a network of support great things can happen.
This year’s event brought out a wide variety of participants, some runners and some not, however enthusiasm was plentiful and community impact was paramount. We both had the privilege to step out onto the course and share a few miles with the participants.
I2P operates on the premise of using the few youth ambassadors to help educate and inspire many followers. The Edmonton Run-a-thon mirrored this by engaging a few local participants, to go and impact and inspire many Edmontonians.
Our vision is to kick out annual Run-a-thons in major cities all throughout the country, even into the USA and one day branch out internationally. The concept is simple, and the message is simple, INSPIRE, EDUCATE and EMPOWER. From there literally anything is possible!!
